Animation is a filmmaking technique whereby pictures are created or manipulated and then played in rapid sequence to create the illusion of moving images. An early mechanical antecedent was Joseph Plateau's 1833 phenakistiscope, which introduced the principle of stroboscopic animation later applied in the zoetrope.
