Andre Derain met Matisse as a fellow student under the Symbolist painter Eugene Carriere and, in the summer of 1905, joined him for a formative two-month stay in Collioure, a fishing town on France's southwest coast. There, alongside Matisse and Maurice de Vlaminck, Derain became one of the principal figures of Fauvism, producing landscapes and figure studies in brilliant, non-naturalistic color with broken, impulsive brushwork between roughly 1905 and 1908. He later moved away from Fauvism's spontaneity toward austere, Cubist-influenced, more monochromatic work, and became a serious collector of modern paintings and African and Oceanic objects, reflecting the primitivist interests that shaped early twentieth century modernism generally.
