John Burgee

John Burgee is an American architect who was Philip Johnson's design partner from 1967 to 1991 in the firm Johnson/Burgee Architects, and whose own name carried the practice through its final decade as Johnson's role in day to day design work receded. Their collaborations include Pennzoil Place in Houston (1976), the AT&T Building in New York (1984), and PPG Place in Pittsburgh (1984), the postmodern skyscrapers that made the firm one of the most visible architectural practices of its era. Burgee, a 1956 graduate of the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture, eased Johnson out of the firm in 1991; Johnson/Burgee Architects went bankrupt shortly afterward, and Burgee's own design career effectively ended with it. He later served on Notre Dame's board of trustees and on his old school's advisory council.
