Louis Armstrong was an American trumpeter, singer and bandleader from New Orleans whose improvisational virtuosity and expressive vocal style shaped the course of jazz as it grew from a regional idiom into a widely popular art form. His recordings across the 1920s established the soloist as jazz's central figure, and his distinctive singing remained a fixture of popular music through the middle of the twentieth century.
