Houses at L'Estaque

Houses at L'Estaque is a 1908 landscape Georges Braque painted at the Provencal fishing village of L'Estaque, reducing the hillside houses to blocky, near-monochrome geometric volumes with little regard for conventional perspective. Submitted to the Salon d'Automne jury, which rejected it, the painting was shown instead at a solo exhibition where the critic Louis Vauxcelles described the work dismissively as bizarreries cubiques, bizarre little cubes, the phrase from which Cubism took its name.
