Mies's last completed building and his only major postwar commission in his native Germany: a glass hall roofed by a single black steel plate, raised on eight columns so slender that the roof appears to float. He did not live to see it age; he died within a year of its 1968 opening, in the city whose Bauhaus he had once been forced to close. Below the glazed hall, a lower level cut into the site holds most of the permanent collection. A 2015 to 2021 renovation, led by David Chipperfield, dismantled and restored some 35,000 building components.
